Secrets of Success: Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneur success tips to ensure a successful business

Entrepreneur success relies on many different qualities and skillsets. But realize it doesn't require a special type of person. You don't need to be an MBA graduate or even a college graduate at all. However, it does demand a go-getter attitude, a clear vision, tenacity, a willingness to accept change, and committed work. That being said, consider the following tips as sound school for thought as you take the steps toward a startup business.

Mind over matter

A common theme you'll see on this website is the need to change your way of thinking to unlock the secrets of success in life. I keep repeating it because it's what trips up so many of us. Successful entrepreneurs just don't believe in their business vision, they believe 100% in themselves. They visualize success everyday and they "see" themselves as the recipients of its benefits at all times. They attract success to them. Does pessimism rule your thoughts? Do you play the blame game, or do you look for the positives when life turns ugly? Are you a born cynic? A writer named Mike Zimmerman once wrote: "there are no successful cynics." Success requires forward movement. A cynical or indecisive mind might be inclined to step back or not move at all. Where is your head at?

An entrepreneur success tip you won't hear everyday

You don't need to start out high-tech or with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt to be a successful entrepreneur. And the business doesn't need to include a never before seen product or service, or be in anyway glamorous. Low-tech is absolutely fine. By minimizing your initial cash investment and keeping your business simple to run, you'll be more likely to maintain and grow a healthy business and profit.

Don't fall into analysis paralysis

"Those who have attained things worth having in this world have worked while others idled, have persevered when others gave up in despair, have practiced early in life the valuable habits of self-denial, industry, and singleness of purpose. As a result, they enjoy in later life the success so often erroneously attributed to good luck."

~ Grenville Kleiser

The joke goes something like this: A man is crossing a wide street and as he nears the middle he notices a car descending on him at a high rate of speed. He leaps to the right but the car careens to the right as well and continues its beeline towards him. He runs to the left and once again the car changes course to the left. Paralyzed with fear, the man stands frozen in the street as he watches his impending doom. At the last possible second, the car screeches to a halt just missing the man by inches. The drivers-side window rolls down and out leans a squirrel who says matter of factly, "it isn't easy is it?"

With all the decisions a budding entrepreneur faces in his or her day (some of them as formidable as a speeding car coming right at you), it's easy to overanalyze any given situation into complete paralysis. You can "research" something to death, including your business. Don't get caught in that trap. Sure, grab some well-informed advice, but use your best intuition and make a move. Remember: an elemental secret of success is that success requires forward movement.
